News – Mission Network News https://www.mnnonline.org Mission Network News Fri, 17 Nov 2023 05:00:28 -0500 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.24 Israel: Is Hezbollah the next big threat? https://www.mnnonline.org/news/israel-is-hezbollah-the-next-big-threat/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 05:00:26 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205576 Israel (MNN) — Could another “October 7th-type of attack” come from Hezbollah in the North?

That’s the question on the minds of many Israelis, even as they adjust to life in wartime. Around 200,000 Israelis have fled their homes at both the northern and southern borders.

Eric Mock with Slavic Gospel Association says, “Most reports show about 80% of the Israeli military up on the northern border. They don’t know what Hezbollah will do. So they’re in constant fear that now, all of a sudden, it’s the eye of the storm before rockets come from the North.

(Photo courtesy of Oleg with Slavic Gospel Association)

“So even as they attempt to go back to normal, there’s this recognition that at any second, at any moment, much like what happened to them earlier on October 7, everything could change.”

SGA supports Russian-speaking churches in Israel, which include Jews who fled the war in Ukraine.

However, instead of being immobilized by a new war front, these believers understand the fear their neighbors are going through, and they’re responding with compassion.

“We’re talking about all these people that have been displaced,” says Mock. “Much like a hurricane coming into New Orleans, much like we see other destructions, these people now have nowhere to go.”

With SGA’s help, Russian-speaking churches are delivering groceries to the displaced and gathering for meals.

Mock says, “Central to distribution of food is relationship building, and then the questions follow the relationship building. The questions then provide bridges for the Gospel.”

Pray for spiritual fruit in Israel. Ask the Lord to encourage churches representing Christ and comfort those living in grief and fear.

Afghan Christians lament, yet hope remains https://www.mnnonline.org/news/afghan-christians-lament-yet-hope-remains/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 05:00:25 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205544 Afghanistan (MNN) — Oppression and injustice grow daily in Afghanistan. Restrictions imposed by the Taliban occupy even the most intimate spaces – homes, families, and minds.

“In countries like Afghanistan, we get some of the longest messages,” SAT-7’s Joe Willey says.

“Conversations between a viewer support team member and a [caller] may go on longer than [in] other countries that have the freedom [to worship Christ.]”

SAT-7 provides Gospel access in the Middle East/North Africa region and supports believers through satellite TV and digital services. More about that here.

SAT-7 recently surveyed its viewers in Afghanistan and Iran about women’s rights and religious freedom. The results held few surprises. “We hear of the struggles; we have, at times, heard very difficult stories,” Willey admits.

Yet hope remains. “Although we in the West may shake our heads and lament the lack of freedom to follow Christ, the Church is growing. That is a testament [to] the power of God working through His Church,” Willey says.

“It is not just a gloomy prognosis. There is hope because our hope is in Christ.”

SAT-7 programs like Insiders encourage Afghans who long for greater religious freedom and autonomy – support from believers like you keeps Insiders on the air.

Learn more about SAT-7’s work in Afghanistan here.

“If you learn more, you can have a real understanding and compassion for people in much different circumstances than many in the West,” Willey says.

Most importantly, pray. “Prayer is not a last resort. It’s a first response,” Willey says.

“Pray for isolated believers in countries where their freedom is limited.”

Surprise encounter brings two ministries together for God’s glory https://www.mnnonline.org/news/surprise-encounter-brings-two-ministries-together-for-gods-glory/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 05:00:28 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205567 Liberia (MNN) —  God often uses surprise encounters to accomplish His perfect plan in unexpected ways.

At a recent pastors’ gathering, Mission Cry’s president, Rev. Jason Woolford, met a pastor’s wife who teaches music to students in Liberia over Zoom. She was trying to send new instruments to them, but the plans kept falling through.

It just so happened that Mission Cry was preparing a shipping container full of Bibles and Christian books to be sent to a seminary in Liberia.

“Well, you know, Liberia is a pretty big country,” Woolford said to her. He was amazed when they discovered that the two ministries are just miles away from each other.

To the glory of God, Mission Cry’s container now has several pallets of brand-new cellos and violins. It is scheduled to ship in late November.

Talk about the Lord ordering the footsteps of the righteous,” says Woolford. “[Us] being at this event, sitting in front of these pastors, all so God could get the Word and these musical instruments to our brothers and sisters in Monrovia. That’s so great.”

You can play a part in this God-story by supporting Mission Cry here. It costs $11,000 to send containers like this one that are packed full of Bibles and Christian books worth that amount many times over.

“[Donations] would help the ministry as we do things in faith and trust God to prompt and prick the right hearts at the right time to make a difference in people’s lives in sending these containers,” says Woolford.

Also, join in praying that there would be no delays or extra fees from officials once the container arrives in port.

“In 70 years of ministry, it’s only happened to us twice. So I know it’s because God’s people are praying for the security and the distribution of it.”

Rebel alliance threatens Myanmar military government https://www.mnnonline.org/news/rebel-alliance-threatens-myanmar-military-government/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 05:00:12 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205537 Myanmar (MNN) — Myanmar’s junta government faces its biggest challenge since taking power in a 2021 coup.

“In late October, three defense groups came together, formed an alliance, and they intend to stretch this military government beyond capacity,” AMG International’s Brian Dennett says.

“They’re calling it the Three Brotherhood Alliance.”

Over a hundred army soldiers accepted payment from the Three Brotherhood Alliance to lay down their arms yesterday. It’s the largest surrender since widespread conflict began two years ago, giving the alliance traction across northern Myanmar.

“They’ve been able to capture several key towns [and] military posts” in the past two weeks, Dennett says.

“It’s the greatest test this government has had, giving a lot of hope that maybe they (the government) could be defeated.”

Armed ethnic groups have been fighting Myanmar’s central government for greater autonomy for decades, displacing more than a million people.

AMG’s national missionaries have provided 237 families with relief packets!

“The people of Myanmar have suffered so much, and the level of anger and frustration at the continued horrors the military has inflicted on its citizens is just unbelievable,” Dennett says.

Relentless violence and desperation open doors for the Gospel. AMG International works alongside local Christians to deliver help and hope in the name of Jesus. More about that here.

“Both pastors and our church network in Myanmar, and our extensive team in Thailand, [have] been working to provide food, health care, relief items, [meeting] urgent needs ever since this coup began in 2021,” Dennett says.

Persecution leads to pioneering in Chinese churches https://www.mnnonline.org/news/persecution-leads-to-pioneering-in-chinese-churches/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 05:00:17 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205549 China (MNN) — Christians in China continue to face persecution, but by God’s grace they are responding with creativity and resilience.

Joe Handley with A3 says that it is difficult to get information in and out of China.

“Fortunately, we do have channels where we’re hearing what’s happening in the church in the country. While they’re under duress and persecution in many cases, they continue to thrive.”

After their church was shut down, one congregation went to a large park dressed like ordinary citizens, but their headphones were tuned in to their pastor preaching. They were then able to meet in small, unobtrusive groups for fellowship.

(Photo courtesy of Baydar Bakht on Unsplash)

“That’s the kind of creativity that I’m hearing come out of the church of China,” Handley says. “Frankly, I think the rest of us can learn from that.

“As things change in the landscape of the global church, what will the biblical ecclesia — the biblical church — look like for tomorrow? How can we equip leaders for the church of tomorrow? That’s exactly what the Chinese church has done.”

Handley tells about one leader’s perspective given in a recent meeting outside of the country.

“We’re going to be okay,” the leader said. “We’re used to this. We lived for years under this kind of pressure, and right now is a season where we simply have to adapt.”

You can help believers in Asia by supporting A3’s leadership development efforts in countries like China, and by praying for these Christians experiencing persecution.

“Pray for the pressure they face,” Handley says. “They’re constantly having to switch. I know one group that has to change their channel for communication every 12 hours or so, simply because they’re being watched.”

How The Jesus Film is reaching northern Ghana https://www.mnnonline.org/news/how-the-jesus-film-is-reaching-northern-ghana/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 05:00:06 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205558 GHANA (MNN) — What movies have changed your life? Missionaries in Ghana, West Africa are sharing the JESUS Film and seeing many from unreached people groups come to faith in Christ.

Samuel Afrifa with OneWay Africa says, “To organize a crusade, you need a lot of money. But with the JESUS Film, with our backpacks and our motos (motorcycles), we are able to get to a community and gather the people in no time to come and hear God’s Word.”

OneWay Africa missionaries like Afrifa travel on motorbikes to some of the most remote parts of northern Ghana, among people steeped in Islamic or animistic beliefs.

Because the film is available in a community’s heart language, it draws people who might not otherwise come to see the story of the life of Christ.

“The best part is that they hear this message in their own language,” Afrifa says, “So it attracts the old, the young, chiefs, unbelievers, and imams. They all come in their numbers, and they watch the JESUS Film. After that, we admonish and make altar calls.

“It is a very cost-effective yet efficient tool that’s helping send the gospel to many, many hearts.”

JESUS is shared all over the world. In OneWay Africa alone, God has used the evangelistic film to reach more than 380,000 people since 2017, with more than 43,000 responding in faith to Christ. They have served among unreached people groups such as the Mamprusi, Fulani, Wala, Gonja and others.

Join OneWay Africa in praying for God to raise up more missionary riders plus the support they need for this critical outreach in Ghana. Ask God to continue to multiply the gospel impact of JESUS among even more people groups around the world.

Palestinian Christians say army surrounds Gaza church https://www.mnnonline.org/news/army-surrounds-gaza-church-palestinian-christians-say/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 05:00:12 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205522 Gaza Strip (MNN) — A senior member of Israel’s government calls on Gaza Arabs to “voluntarily emigrate” as war rages in Gaza City.

Over two-thirds of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have fled their homes since the war began in early October. Hundreds of Palestinian Christians remain in place, however, and they’re in trouble.

“A couple of hours ago, I got a message from the Christian community begging us to pray because the army [is] surrounding the church, and all of the Christians have gone to the church building,” Nashat Filmon with the Palestinian Bible Society says.

“They don’t know [if] they’re going to make it or not through this war.”

The United Nations says 200,000 Palestinians fled to southern Gaza in the last ten days, including some Palestinian Christians. Two church compounds in Gaza City shelter the remaining believers.

Elham Farah, shot and killed on November 12, was one of Filmon’s long-time friends.
(Photo courtesy of Nashat Filmon/Palestinian Bible Society)

“Christians are between a rock and a hard place. Some Christians tried to follow [the] instruction given to them and go south, but there [was] no place for them to go; they don’t have relatives” to take them in, Filmon explains.

“There is no identified specific place [in southern Gaza.] Therefore, they took refuge in the house of the Lord.”

On Sunday, “Sadly, somebody I knew for a long time, the piano player at the Baptist church, was walking from the church compound to her home when she got shot,” Filmon says.

“[In] the last phone conversation, she was saying ‘I cannot feel my legs,’ and she was there bleeding till she died. Nobody was able to reach where she was to help her.”

Ask the Lord to protect Christ-followers in the Gaza Strip. Nine Palestinian Bible Society team members support believers in Gaza with essential items like food, water, and medicine.

“Most people in North America do not know that Christians have been living there (in Gaza) for ages,” Filmon says.

“This is maybe a wake-up call, or if you wish, a kind reminder that we exist. We are here in the Gaza Strip, and we need your prayers.”

Nepal earthquake: Keys for Kids Storytellers arrive just in time https://www.mnnonline.org/news/nepal-earthquake-keys-for-kids-storytellers-arrive-just-in-time/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 05:00:46 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205505 Nepal (MNN) — Details finally begin to emerge from the minority Christian community in western Nepal after a devastating November 3 earthquake.

One official says 13 churches were destroyed, and over 40 believers were injured. Church leaders put the estimates much higher, saying at least 20 churches and 18,000 Christian homes were damaged.

Keys for Kids Ministries’ Greg Yoder says, thankfully, none of their Nepali partners died, but “some folks have lost their homes because so many aftershocks have taken place.”

(Photo courtesy of Good News Nepal via Keys for Kids Ministries)

Nepal is a majority Hindu nation, and Christians are often excluded from disaster relief efforts.

Keys for Kids partners respond in the name of Jesus, offering help for today and hope for tomorrow to anyone in need. Leaders on the ground say the November 3 earthquake centered 200km from their training facility.

Keys for Kids resources arrived just in time, mere days before the earthquake hit.

“We were able to deliver 200 Storytellers within the last two weeks. They call them ‘the red books’ because they’re audio Bibles along with Keys for Kids stories on them in the Nepali language,” Yoder says.

“Pray that [believers can] use them with some of these families.”

Help Keys for Kids meet earthquake survivors’ physical and spiritual needs here.

“Be praying for the safety of our partners; pray that they’ll have the opportunity to share the Gospel with many hurting families,” Yoder requests.

Pray “that God will open the hearts of those affected by this earthquake. We could see a whole groundswell of people coming to faith in Christ.”

For Haiti With Love serves community https://www.mnnonline.org/news/for-haiti-with-love-serves-community/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 05:00:06 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205487 Haiti (MNN) —  “We’re here to help the people,” Eva DeHart with For Haiti With Love said.

An organization in Northern Haiti, For Haiti With Love, takes the call of Matthew 25:35-40 to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, and shelter the homeless seriously.

The headquarters of For Haiti With Love is part medical clinic, part pharmacy, and part homeless shelter.

“It’s a variety of things that you encounter with people who have absolutely no flexibility with money,” DeHart said.  “We’re dealing with the poorest of the poor in the population, which means there is no emergency fund.”

For many Haitians, they have come to rely on For Haiti With Love as a place to go when they have emergencies.

The organization transports people to the hospital and helps arrange how people will pay for their hospital visits.

“It’s just a variety of things that come up that you’ve got to have flexibility in your budget and in your personnel to be able to deal with, we’re there to help the people and sometimes their definition is a little bit broader than ours,” DeHart said. “And so you try to fill that gap.”

One challenge this ministry faces is security. DeHart said a necessary part of living in Haiti is having a security team of armed guards as well as gates around their facility.

For Haiti With Love is well-known enough in the area that they can manage the demand for medical care and food more than ministries closer to the Port-au-Prince area.

While working with patients, a majority of whom are being treated for burns, For Haiti With Love makes it a priority to share the Gospel through prayer.

“We make them very aware that without God’s provision, we wouldn’t be there to be this disperser of His funds in order for them to get the benefit…God is the supplier, we are just managing it,” DeHart explained.

For Haiti With Love has been blessed by very loyal supporters in the United States. DeHart said they pray to be the best stewards of the money they get.

Medical care for burn victims can be very expensive and it can take a long time for a patient to heal, but DeHart says that she prays people will stick with the organization in their giving so they can continue to help people in need.

Pray for peace to be brought to Haiti and that For Haiti With Love can continue to service the community of Northern Haiti well.

Israelis grappling with collective, generational trauma https://www.mnnonline.org/news/israelis-grappling-with-collective-generational-trauma/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 05:00:57 +0000 https://www.mnnonline.org/?post_type=news&p=205494 Israel/Gaza (MNN) — Israeli forces are at the gates of Al Shifa Hospital, Gaza City’s main hospital above Hamas headquarters. The hospital is running out of fuel, and at least 32 patients have died. Yet, Hamas blocked Israeli efforts to deliver more fuel. The IDF says they plan to help evacuate babies at the hospital’s request.

An Israeli defense spokesperson emphasized Al Shifa Hospital is not under siege and reminded the world that Hamas still has 239 Israeli hostages.

Meanwhile, missile sirens continue to sound every day in Israel. Over 9,500 rockets have been fired on Israel from both Hamas in the south and Hezbollah in the north since the war began.

Victor Kalisher of the Bible Society in Israel says Israelis are grappling with collective, generational trauma. “When someone has been through a trauma, everything that reminds you of that brings you back to the situation that you remember.

The Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington D.C., USA. (Photo courtesy of Tatiana Rodriguez/Unsplash)

“In our collective historic memory, we have the Holocaust. We have a lot of disasters. You know we celebrate Purim. It’s the story of Haman. And [then] Pharaoh. It is part of our identity. It’s not something foreign. It’s not a story about someone far. It is our story. We teach it to our children, we celebrate it every year, and we feel that it is the same thing. It happened to us again, and we are shocked.

“It’s the same demons that can chop heads off children, burn them, rape women and girls, and things that you cannot imagine…just unbelievable.”

Churches are asking the Bible Society in Israel specifically for biblical resources for traumatized kids and teens.

“We share resources for children and youth because they go through very difficult times. For children to go in this time, they have a lot of questions, they are afraid, the rockets are falling everywhere, the sirens are every day, and many of them are very scared obviously,” says Kalisher.

Messianic Hebrew resources for youth are limited. Over the last few years, the Bible Society in Israel has produced children’s books and resources in Hebrew that tell Bible stories, communicate Christian values, and engage kids at different stages.

You can support the Bible Society in Israel here as they develop more biblical resources in Hebrew for kids.

“We want to help them, to encourage them so that this time will not just be a time where they sit in front of the TV watching and scared and so on, but that they use it in a positive way and grow spiritually.”

Kalisher asks, “Pray that the Church will seek the truth biblically of what is happening and what should be the response of the Church…. We need to really seek the face of God. What is our role in this plan of salvation of yours, God? Because it affects every one of us.”
